ACT projects shine in national awards

Canberra’s architectural excellence attracted national accolades tonight with four local projects receiving honours in this year’s Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards.

The strong showing by practices in the Territory was celebrated at a national awards ceremony that returned to Canberra in 2017 and awarded a total of 44 projects from around the country.

ACT projects accounted for two out of the three projects recognised nationwide in the Commercial Architecture category.

The Equestrian Centre, covered arena and polocrosse field that together make up Willinga Park by Cox Architecture won a National Award for having created what the jury described as ‘an immersive habitat, celebrating connections between human, nature and animal that are amplified by confident form-making.’

NewActon Nishi by Fender Katsalidis Architect received a National Commendation with the jury applauding the project for providing ‘a refreshing model for commercial architecture, fusing a number of compatible elements into a microcosm of a city.’

The Embassy of Sweden by Guida Moseley Brown Architects received a National Commendation for Heritage, one of only five projects to be recognised in this category across the country. The jury noted the subtle restoration of the building while retaining the intrinsic Swedish character. The practice also received a National Commendation in the Interior Architecture category for Canberra Airport – International.

Congratulations to all!
